Vanilla sugar

Vanilla sugar is a common ingredient in sweet baked goods: all kinds of cakes, desserts, creams, etc. It is very simple to make at home and definitely healthier than store-bought, considering that commercial vanilla sugar is most often vanilla-flavored sugar made from the artificial compound vanillin or ethyl vanillin. A vanilla bean is not the cheapest, but one is enough for about 2 cups of sugar. Since I tried homemade vanilla sugar, I always make it myself. It is far better than the store-bought kind.

Ingredients:

  • 400g of sugar
  • 1 vanilla bean

Preparation:

  1. Pour the sugar into a seal-able jar.
  2. ut the vanilla bean in half lengthwise and use a knife to scrape out the seeds. Mix the seeds and the empty vanilla pod (you can cut it in half crosswise as well) with the sugar. (Make sure to bury the empty vanilla pod well in the sugar). Close the jar and set it in a dark place for about 2 weeks. Shake the jar occasionally.
